Story #30 is an introduction to one of our founders, Lewis J. McCoy, Sr.
The story goes that Mr. McCoy started his individual engineering practice because “everyone deserves clean water”. He focused the firm on water and wastewater services to local governments until expanding and joining forces with Charlie Stevens and later, Walter Spotts.
Mr. McCoy graduated from Drexel University in 1957 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. A year later he earned an M.S. in Sanitary Engineering from Northwestern University. Mr. McCoy was a registered Professional Engineer (PE) and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
His list of memberships and affiliations is extensive, showing just how passionate he was about the field. Some of his memberships included: Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Water Pollution Control Federation, American Water Works Association, and American Public Works Association. Mr. McCoy brought his passion and expertise to work everyday both as a leader in his field and a leader at SSM.

Story #28 is a project profile of a food distribution warehouse.
1997 | Industrial Site Engineering and Wetlands Development
SSM provided all site engineering for this 1.3 million square foot food warehouse and distribution center in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, PA. Acme was the ultimate facility owner, however SSM’s contract was through High Real Estate. SSM was responsible for the complete site design including site layout, grading, stormwater management stormwater collection and conveyance, traffic circulation, landscaping and coordination of site utilities, including relocation of high voltage electric transmission towers. The site design included mitigation design for six small wetland areas. SSM also provided construction administration services to the owner.
In addition to completing the site design, SSM ushered the project through Subdivision and Land Development approval at the township level as well as PaDEP and PennDOT permit approvals. In order to obtain township and PennDOT approval SSM prepared a Traffic Impact Study that included 17 intersections in the project area. SSM collected traffic count data at the subject intersections, predicted background growth, predicted the amount and directional distribution of site-generated traffic, and evaluated the improvements needed at each intersection based upon the projected traffic.

Story #27 is a collection of memories about the era of our wiffle ball tournaments!
The story goes that David Mullany invented the Wiffle Ball in the 1950s in his backyard. Mullany set out to design a ball that his 12 year old son and friends could use to easily throw curveballs. After a few versions, they agreed the one with the 8 perforations worked best. The name "wiffle" came from the neighborhood name for strikeout, "wiff." After all - those curveballs led to many strikeouts!
Once there was a Friday afternoon game of Wiffle Ball at SSM. And then there was another. And another. And, they continued to grow into a full Wiffle Ball season that was enjoyed several summers in a row.
Our Wiffle Ball seasons culminated with a picnic and award of fun prizes and team accolades. There were regulars at the game - on the field and off - some just grabbing a lawn chair and enjoying the game!
We've always enjoyed a bit of competition mixed with a load of comradery. If you missed our story about summer mini golf competitions, you're going to want to go check it out!

Story #26 is a walk down memory lane of our miniature golf challenges!
Once upon a time we found out what happens when you put engineers and designers together to create… a miniature golf hole. Let's just say, the results did not disappoint.
In the early 2000s our people added "miniature golf aficionado" to their resumes. Once a year we'd hold a summer stay and play day. Employees would form a team and then design a hole for the event, and then we'd all join meet on the course and play a round of golf.
The winners of the tournament picked a charity to receive the funds of all of the entries.

In our history files is this program book from 1968.
The book was a publication of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers Reading Chapter.
Inside is a great article all about Lewis J. McCoy, Sr. But, just as exciting is the discovery that there was a little bit of SSM scattered throughout the entire publication.
Mr. Spotts, Mr. Stevens, and Mr. McCoy hadn't yet joined forces at the time of this publication. Instead, each one was advertised in their own unique way. We guess it's safe to say the synergy was there even before they put it into action.

Story #23 - Four Wind Rose
Story #23 is about Homer’s Four Wind Rose and how it became a symbol at SSM.
Story #23 is about Homer’s Four Wind Rose and how it became a symbol at SSM.
To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Spotts Engineering Associates in 1952, Walter Spotts treated clients to a 14”x18” hand drawn copy of Homer's Four Wind Rose.
Mr. Spotts hand lettered the drawing which shows the evolution of what had become the face of the mariner’s compass from the ninth century B.C. beginnings. Direction was determined by the place from which prevailing winds blew. There were four winds in Homer’s world. Boreas, the north wind, blew from Thrace, a wind that rolled up mighty waves. Norus, the south wind, was a stormy petrel bringing sudden squalls, hence dangerous to navigators. Zephryus, the west wind was often represented as a stormy wind but not by Homer who knew the west, where the climate was temperate and the people prosperous. Eurus, the east wind, was seldom mentioned.
The wind rose of Homer evolved through the centuries and civilizations to the seventeenth century, 32 point compass face familiar in form, if not by names, to modern navigators. Mr. Spotts, captured that evolution and beauty in his reproduction.
This drawing continues to be an inspirational token at SSM. Our Reading office still holds the original in a frame along one of our main hallways. And, throughout the years several reproductions have been in made in honor of both Mr. Spotts and SSM.

July 2020 Press Release:
Spotts Stevens and McCoy Announces Expansion to Firm
July 06, 2020 | Spotts, Stevens and McCoy (SSM) is thrilled to announce an expansion to our regional engineering, environmental, and surveying firm. SSM created a new Energy and Sustainability Services division, to be led by its new director, Paul Spiegel, PE, LEED AP. Spiegel formerly served as President of Practical Energy Solutions (PES), the West Chester-based energy consulting firm. This expansion extends the scope of the three existing divisions under the SSM umbrella: Facility Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
PES and SSM have worked together for years, serving similar clients in complementary ways, and even more recently, sharing an office building. But it is the synergy and overlap of values and services that made this an opportune time to expand and introduce this new division.
We are a firm that believes in improving the quality of life for our clients, our employees, and for all of the people touched by the work that we do. It’s this mission that drives the services and goals of the new division: transforming buildings into comfortable, efficient, healthy spaces to live and work.
“Environmental responsibility and creating a sustainable future have always been initiatives that guide the work that we do. It’s only right to bring on a team that will stand with us in leaving the world a better place”, says Eileen Kaley, SSM Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer.
Several other members of the professional staff of PES will also be joining the team under the division, establishing a deep-seeded expertise in providing clients practical and creative energy management, consulting, education, and technical advisement.
Brian Kelly, SSM’s President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “This is incredibly exciting news for all of our clients, and especially for the communities that we serve. Combining our expertise is going to change the game for the services we offer and bring a new depth to the solutions we provide.”

Story #18 is a unique way that SSM acknowledged our employees.
Believe it or not, giraffes used to be a staple around the SSM office!
At SSM we’ve always had a passion for highlighting our people and the work that they do. A previous story in our series was about the Little Lulu award that SSM utilized throughout the 80’s and 90’s. This story is about another employee recognition era at SSM: The Order of the Giraffe.
The Giraffe Award (2014-2017) was a peer recognition award for both individuals and teams. The giraffe, named Spotts, was awarded to someone that went head and shoulders above the rest. Once awarded, Spotts lived on the individual's desk for the month until the next award ceremony. Accompanying Spotts, winners of the award received a small plastic giraffe to keep, as well as a monetary award for their hard work.
Teams at SSM could also be awarded The Tower Award! A Tower refers to a group of Giraffes. The Tower Award was also presented monthly to the team that stretched beyond the normal and went above and beyond what’s expected.
Today, there are still some small plastic giraffes floating around SSM offices.

June 2004 | Spotts, Stevens and McCoy Expands Facility Engineering Services
SSM announced in June of 2004 an expansion to its Facility Engineering services with the addition of seven staff members, formerly with Hill & Bell Associates (HBA) of Pottstown PA. The addition of this team of individuals expanded SSM’s capabilities into the high tech building market, including R&D laboratories, data centers and telecommunications facilities and also expanded SSM’s geographic market from the Mid-Atlantic region to the Eastern United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
At the time, HBA was positioned for dramatic growth over the next 12-18 months and sought to be a part of a larger organization with the resources to satisfy that growth.
bruce bell, 2004
SSM and HBA had been working together as partners. The more the two did together, the more it was clear of the synergies between the firms and the benefit of the full range of services to offer both client bases. It was a natural fit to formerly roll the HBA firm into SSM firm via SSM hiring their people and assuming their clients.
The transition of technical staff included: Bruce Bell and Catherine “Kitty” Bell. Mr. Bell joined SSM as a Director in the Facility Engineering department; Ms. Bell as a Senior Project and Client Manager. In addition, Ralph Nevel, P.E. joined the firm as a Senior Electrical Engineer; Jack Fisher and David Eidle as Senior Designers; and Andrew Wengerd as a Mechanical Specialist.
In regards to the transition, Kitty Bell said “SSM’s complimentary service offerings, established position in the marketplace, and strong reputation were factors in our decision to join the firm. But what really made this firm stand out was the high comfort level we felt with the culture here.”
The transition was a successful one as many of the former HBA employees continued their employment with SSM, many until retirement. In October of 2021 Kitty Bell retired from SSM as the Vice President of Facility Engineering. Bruce Bell continues to provide expertise to our clients as a Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Facilities Division alongside Andrew Wengerd, Manager of Mechanical Engineering and David Eidle, Senior Designer.
Over the years, the transition of employees from Hill & Bell Associates into the SSM team played an exponential role in expanded services, expertise, and experience for our clients and communities. Our Facilities division, including Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering and design is a team unmatched by most other firms in our region. The expertise, coupled with the capabilities of our multi-disciplinary firm makes SSM the best single-source solution for any engineering challenge, no matter how many facets

Story #14 is a profile of a unique project at a Trout Hatchery in the State of Maryland.
SSM Baltimore Office: Fish Hatchery for State of Maryland
SSM team members designed renovations for a trout hatchery that would then produce rainbow trout for Maryland fishermen. SSM was assigned the schematic design, design development, and construction documents phases of the renovation project.
From 300,000 Eggs to 85,000 Trout
At the time of this project, the hatching process at this location went as follows: 300,000 eggs are flown from commercial hatcheries in the State of Washington to the Maryland hatcheries, where they are incubated in hatching troughs for about 20 days until they hatch, and the fingerlings remain for about three months.
The trout from both hatcheries are then transferred to outdoor fingerling ponds at the hatchery. Then, after a further period, transferred to raceways where they stay until they reach stock size of 10 to 18 inches. Rearing from egg to stock size takes “16 months and a lot of care,” according to John P. Horst, SSM Project Manager at the time.
The renovations that SSM was brought on for were to increase production at the hatchery. Two collapsed 100 ft. raceways which were not used for years were restored to production, supplementing 17 existing 200 ft. raceways. Raceways were 6 ft. wide and about 4 ft. deep. A new pumping system was also to be designed to recirculate water from the hatchery outfall to a point just downstream from the 3,000 gpm spring which feeds the system.
Increased Flow Speeds Growth of Fish
The new pumps were incorporated to increase total flow through the raceways to about 5,000 gpm, and to raise the water temperature a couple of degrees. Both factors would contribute to an increase in the growth rate of the trout, and with the added raceways, approximately double the production of the hatchery.
Other renovations included improvements to stream banks; a movable floating cover over the natural spring to block out ultraviolet light and cut down algae growth; replacement of a water supply line from the spring to the hatchery building; rebuilding fingerling pond walls’ bridge reconstruction; resurfacing of paved areas around raceways; and improvements to a shop building and a residence.

Audubon Pennsylvania | Blue Mountain-Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Project
map of corridor
SSM assisted Audubon Pennsylvania in its efforts to develop the Blue Mountain-Kittatinny Ridge Corridor into Pennsylvania’s premier greenway. SSM’s role centered around the development of a corridor-wide GIS product. The GIS project consisted of gathering and developing spatial data within the geographic limits of the project study area. A comprehensive list of data was the end product and included land ownership, stewardship data, government contact links, sensitive flora and fauna data, and other planning and environmental information. Initially, the GIS project was made available to governing, planning, and environmental agencies within the study area with the expectation that the data would enable those agencies to more efficiently attend to their professional responsibilities while keeping in mind the conservation goals. The project was developed into a web mapping application for the general public.
SSM also assisted Audubon in hosting a series of public meetings, one in each of the 11 counties where the corridor lies. In each of those meetings, participants were shown a slideshow on the importance of the mountain for many wildlife, conservation and recreational uses. Public meeting participants had the opportunity to move about the room to different GIS-produced exhibits. The participants also had the opportunity to discuss their values about the greenway, how they use it, and voice concerns about the natural resources of the greenway.
