Mission Critical Facilties
Engineering Tomorrow’s Infrastructure. In a world racing toward quantum supremacy and AI breakthroughs, there’s a quiet layer of work that rarely makes headlines, but without it, none of the innovation would be possible. That’s where we operate. We’re one of the few engineering teams dedicated to enabling the future by designing, upgrading, and supporting the physical environments behind the world’s most advanced research and computing systems. We work at the intersection of engineering, innovation, and infrastructure – where next-generation computing meets aging facilities.
We specialize in transforming and maintaining mission-critical environments. These are the spaces where next-generation technology meets the real-world challenges of aging infrastructure. We’re here to ensure these environments remain stable, resilient, and ready for what’s next, so the lights stay on, the temperatures hold steady, and the breakthroughs never stop.
Enabling innovation through resilient, mission-critical environments.
Power and Cooling for High-Density Computing – We design and upgrade power and cooling infrastructure for data centers and quantum computing facilities. This includes Tier-3 level electrical systems, redundant UPS and generator support, static transfer switches, and precision HVAC systems that manage extreme heat loads generated by advanced computing equipment.
Clean Room and Laboratory Support – We convert legacy spaces into state-of-the-art clean rooms and R&D labs for advanced technologies. Our expertise includes the design of process cooling water systems, airflow and environmental controls, and structural reinforcement for high-load lab tooling. From quantum chip packaging to high-precision test environments, we support facilities where particle control, temperature stability, and reliability are non-negotiable.
Engineering inside Operating Facilities – Our work is often done within occupied, aging buildings, many originally designed for outdated technologies. That means phased implementation with minimal shutdowns. We help our clients transition from legacy systems to future-ready infrastructure without interrupting operations, enabling them to stay competitive in rapidly advancing industries.
Structural and Envelope Integrity – We support the long-term health of critical facilities by tackling common issues that impact legacy structures. Our structural insight ensures that facilities remain functional, weather-tight, and ready to support the technology of tomorrow.
HIGHLIGHT PROJECTS
SSM was involved in a renovation project to structurally evaluate the existing roof structure for support of new units for heating and cooling the axe-throwing space.
SSM prepared construction documents for the installation of a dual fuel 1,200 HP boiler to replace a 67 year old water tube boiler.
SSM engineers performed the inspection from an articulating lift and prepared a report of findings in accordance with City requirements
SSM utilized high definition laser scanning equipment and software to quickly and accurately capture the existing facade conditions of the church’s 150-foot bell tower.
Facility engineers provided complete facility services including structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design for the three-story, 75,000 square foot corporate headquarters.
Designed steel framing and foundation walls for the three-story, 36,000 square foot office building.
Provided layout of the site design, grading, stormwater management, sanitary sewer design and permitting, domestic and fire suppressant water service design, landscaping, permit application, and overall project administration between engineer, owner and construction consultants
•SSM's structural engineers provided design engineering for the roof, floor wall/pier, and foundation to meet the challenging wind and seismic conditions demanded by the project location and our technical experts worked closely with the rest of the design and construction.
