MRSA: What did you do today to minimize the risk?
You've seen the headlines, but did you know that . . .
MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is NOT a reason to panic, but it does require common sense precautions.
MRSA testing of surfaces only indicates the condition of the actual spot that was sampled and at the time it was sampled. Another nearby spot could be contaminated.
An area or building sanitized to eliminate MRSA or other bacteria can be re-contaminated with bacteria as soon as it is re-occupied. One study estimated that as many as 2.6% of people in the USA are carriers of MRSA.
Some sanitized surface treatment areas still must be cleaned between uses. The surface treatments will not kill bacteria in biological material (saliva, mucus, blood, etc…) on their surfaces; they only affect bacteria in direct contact with the surface treatment.
Evaluate your MRSA Risk
SSM's IAQ Specialists and Certified Industrial Hygienists can help you evaluate your MRSA risk and recommend proactive measures to reduce the hazard. We have extensive experience in microbiological evaluation and can perform a visual inspection of your facility, collect representative samples to evaluate high risk areas, evaluate current cleaning and maintenance procedures and develop preventative programs including improved maintenance procedures and additional training to reduce your microbial risk.
